List:Translation-NukeNews - Coordination

About this Mailing List

This mailing list should be used for collecting, maybe translating and coordinating of articles for the "NukeNews" newsletters.

The idea is that people from different countries can send their information to this list (to translation-nukenews AT listi.jpberlin.de[1]) - in English please, so people have a chance to understand what it's about. On this list there should be the people who organize the different newsletters (at the moment: rus-nukenews and fin-nukenews). Those people should select the information they want to publish in their newsletters and translate them into their languages.

This list should be used to make agreements about the date when the newsletters will be published, so people from different countries (with different mother tongues) are handled equal. The first newsletter shall release in January, if I remember right.

On these webpages people can sign the newsletters. So you can see which people want to get the Russian or the Finnish NukeNews and it is easy to send the right version of the newsletter to the right persons.

I would introduce the people who feel responsible for a country newsletter in using the administration tool and how to send the newsletters.

First you should promote the "NukeNews" newsletters and find some subscribers. Tell people the web address above to sign the newsletter.


Introduction to the translation-nukenews listserve

There are three basic functions:

  1. Sending contributions for the next issue of the NukeNews newsletter
  2. Translation of the contributions (text) into other languages
  3. Building the different types of language versions of the NukeNews out of the translated contributions (text pieces)


Sending contributions to the NukeNews

The NukeNews newsletter should reflect the activities of activists within the Nuclear Heritage Network. We want to inform about the topics people within the network are working on, about their projects, campaigns and events. The contributions should be sent in English to news AT NukeNews.nuclear-heritage.net[1] and will be forwarded to the translation-nukenews mailinglist. Each contribution (text) should be not longer than one paragraph and contain just a few sentences. There should be a headline, and it is possible to add a link to a webpage with a longer version of the article or with more information on the topic.

(Articles have to be provided in English to make it possible to be translated in the other languages. English is our working language. And it has to be short to keep the newsletter emails brief and easily readable. The subscribers can finde more information on the linked webpages if they want.)


Translation of text

Usually the contributions (articles) will be send in single emails - each email is one (short) article. Thus, it is easy to reply to the article to the list and send it back in the translated version. It makes sense to keep the subject of the email to make it easier to understand what translation is connected to what article. Basically the idea is that there would be several people doing the translation work, and they can see which articles have been translated already. So they could share the translation work. However, at the moment we have for every language version a maximum of one person willing to do the translation. That's why we are looking for more people to help with translation.


Building the NukeNews editions in the specific languages

For each language version there has to be one responsible person who would put the pieces of translated articles together to form the newsletter edition in the specific language. Then this will be sent by email to the specific newsletter listserve. Currently the translators have to do that, because we don't have enough people helping with the NukeNews yet. Ideally there should be additional people to share these tasks. Then all these contributions should be really small tasks and not too much for busy activists to do once every three months.
