Preparation of the Tour

In this section we will give transparency about the status of preparation of the project.

Planning Process

  • the next preparation meeting will be over New Year at the JUKSS (Youth Environmental Congress) in Elmshorn/Germany
  • the most important things to be organized right now are: funding and finding groups to organize the local stops of the Tour
    • for the funding we plan to apply for money at the EU YOUTH IN ACTION programme - the tour project is fitting to the programme quite good and it should be possible to get enough money for it there
    • but it will be much work to write the application as we are supposed to fill some 20 pages of forms of the EU to apply for money
    • for this reason we are looking for people who are willing to discuss the application text and to help with writing parts of it
    • the application has to be sent to the EU by end of January 2010
    • we are currently looking also for groups or people who are willing to organize local stops of the tour in their cities/areas
    • we found already some people in several cities of Finland, in Malmö (Sweden) and in Riga (Latvia)
    • we are still looking for people to organize local stops of the Tour in Denmark, Poland, Germany, other Swedish cities and the Baltic States as well as in Russia close to the Baltic Sea
  • the next big tasks to be done are connected with promotion work: we need flyers and posters to distribute all over Europe (focussing on countries around the Baltic Sea but also elsewhere)
    • we need people to write invitation texts, people to design nice flyers/posters, people to translate these things into other languages and people to distribute the materials
    • the invitation has also to be spread to the international and local networks (e.g. mailing lists, internet forums and blogs, news portals...)
    • would be nice to have an advertising banner to distribute to webpages to promote the Tour - who would design it? who is willing to ask webpage operators to put them on their pages?
  • still unclear is the concrete schedule of the Tour, where we want to start and in which direction we want to travel around the Baltic Sea and also by which means we want to travel
    • some people like the idea of having caravans, others want a biketour or a mixture of different means (boat, train, hitchhiking, bicycle, caravans...)
    • we'll become clear about these things during the next months - at the latest when we apply for money we will have a kind of idea how the schedule should look like
  • another tool to work on is the Baltic Sea Map project - we want to put all information about nuclear sites there; this will be helpful to inform about the issues and also to have good background information for later use

Local Stops of The Tour

At these places we would have local street actions (could be street theatre, info stalls or other type of action), meetings with local activists and maybe offer information events on topics we would like to inform about.

We are currently looking for partner groups/people who want to organize the local stops of the Baltic Sea Info Tour. These local people should organize accommodation and food for the participants of the Tour; they also should make the advertising/promotion in media and for locals of the project and organize the local information events and actions. The participiants of the Tour will join the street actions, help with the events and try to participate the organizing process of these local activities. But most local organizing tasks (as room, food, advertising) will have to be done by local people.

Confirmed Locations
  • Åland (FIN)
  • Helsinki (FIN)
  • Loviisa/Isnäs (FIN)
  • Malmö (SE)
  • Oulu (FIN)
  • Riga (LV)
Uncleared Locations
  • Stockholm (SE)
  • Greifswald (D)
Wished Locations
  • Lübeck (D)
  • other places in Sweden
  • Poland
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Lithuania
  • Baltic region of Russia
Street Actions

The kind of local action and the topics we would focus on should be suggested by the local people, because the Tour should support their work. We can than decide together if the topics and kinds of action fit to the ideas of the other participants/activists.

Preparation of The "Framework"

We are currently only 2-3 people who promised to help organizing the "framework" of the whole Tour project. This is not enough, so please join us!

Preparation of the "framework" means organizing the financing, flyers, posters, advertising, coordinating dates+stuff ... - more in detail:

  • organize money for at least printing of advertising stuff (posters, flyers...), action materials, some food for the travelling time, money for travelling + maybe more if possible to get
  • write text for info materials about the Tour + to give nuclear background information; later: layout them + distribute them
  • discuss and decide the way of the Tour: where should it stop, how long to stay at certain places; which vehicles for transport?
  • make contacts with activists around the Baltic Sea and try to coordinate meetings + stops with them
  • have an overview about planned dates, money, participating people and open tasks...

Past Meetings

Resources & funding

for now, scattered information about these aspects can be found in the notes from the JUKSS workshop notes & the Stockholm meeting notes, and in the Timeline section.

A schematic overview will be constructed at the Resource List page

Content; i.e. what exactly the tour is about

Thoughts from the JUKSS workshop:

Maybe different focus in different places? (Needs coordination!)

  • scandinavia: uranium mining(!), NPP proliferation, waste storage plans, "future nuclear colonies"
    • saami, europe's only indigenous people
  • 'lithuania: very dependent on NPP ignalina, green NGOs campaign for nuclear-free Li.
  • denmark: nuclear-free, lots of renewable energy
  • greifswald (de): example of closed plant (also Barsebäck in Swe)
  • murmansk (ru): there is a campaign (in norway?) to appeal to russian authorities to shut down power plant in murmansk region)

(See also the Nuclear Baltic Map)

Aims / topics?

  • support for affected communities
  • networking, contact
  • awareness raising & information
    • along (future) routes of nuclear material
    • about nuclear issues around the baltic sea
      • distribute map of nuclear industry activity around the baltic sea
      • the baltic sea is radioactive (MILKAS?)
      • Uranium Tails: UF6 transported over the baltic sea
    • alternatives
      • downscaling & localizing, not just "green" version of status quo
      • Knowhow & DIY info: f.ex. small-scale renewable energy
        • specialized business? (f.ex. renewable energy)
  • suggestion: Public Campaign for a Nuclear Free Baltic
    • Not only information, but give some "future" (Message: nuclear-free baltic is possible).
    • Also good countermove against the threat of scandinavia becoming a "nuclear colony"

What profile?

  • we're not "professional", or experts, just people (and that's ok!)
  • activities should be determined by local groups/people!
    • we could provide different options: seminars/workshop "packages", action, info material
