Breaking news issue

A "breaking news" template has been put to the main page last night, without any discussion beforehand, breaking the configuration of the page. Changes of the configuration of the main page should be discussed here first. So far, the policy of the main page was to have all news in the news section, except for two cases in the past: Talvivaara spill and Fukushima disaster. These two emergency alerts were considered so urgent and serious that they were put on the top of the news and events section. However, they came still after the introduction of the website.

The newly implemented breaking news box (with questionable "breaking" news) was last night put on the very top of the page - only the translation section was above. If this was supposed to be a suggestion for positioning a breaking news section, I would argue it is a bad place. First the website should be introduced, then the next important issues should be positioned.

So far, from my understanding, the order of sections was reasonable and usuable: First the general introduction, then the global upcoming events, then the weekly news review, then the news. And everything else at the end of the page. My proposal, in case there should be a breaking news section included permanently on the main page, is to add it only to the top of the news section. Otherwise the upcoming global events and the weekly news review would not appear if people have a first look at the main page.

Anyway, I insist to have a discussion and good clarification on criteria what are "breaking news", before something like this will permanently implemented. I want to refer to the German indymedia breaking news criteria, which could be a good example of a process of defining what are breaking news, and it is also an example showing why it is necessary to have clear criteria.

Requested articles

I read somewhere recently that Europe is "choking on its own nuclear waste", and thought someone from Europe might like to start the article Radioactive waste in Europe.

I also thought a Wind power in Germany article might be good, since I've been unable to find much in English on the web about large wind farms in Germany, even though the country leads the world in installed wind power capacity.

Thanks for considering these requests. Sunshine 02:10, 28 September 2008 (CEST)

Anti-nuclear movement in xxxx

You can see some of our articles coming up in this "anti-nuclear heritage" web search: [1] This is the advantage of having the full "Anti-nuclear movement in xxxx" title on the articles, rather than just the country name. So, unless anyone objects, I will move and expand the titles of articles like Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. -- Sunshine 05:58, 1 October 2008 (CEST)

For me it's OK! :-) --Falk 00:33, 2 October 2008 (CEST)

Spam problems

Some minutes ago I saw that spambots (?) had left their trash on one of our pages. It was on the Radioactive waste in Europe page. I deleted the spam and protected the page, so only registered users can edit it. If you have better ideas to handle this problem please tell me. --Falk 00:33, 2 October 2008 (CEST)

Yes, this does seem to be an ongoing problem. I notice some wikis now use CAPTCHAS to try to stop spammers. Sunshine 22:39, 24 October 2008 (CEST)
If anybody knows how to use this software tool for this website, please tell me! I would need the source to install and an instruction manual how to do it... --Falk 20:01, 25 October 2008 (CEST)

Too much info

Think we have too much information on this main page. Maybe some of it is no longer current and could be removed? Or split to other pages? Sunshine 00:33, 1 November 2008 (CET)

Yes, you're right. I would like to have the main page as a kind of portal page - to get a quick overview to important events, messages, material, ... ? I would like to have for example some boxes with these topics. But until now I didn't find the time to create something like this. Most of the information below on the side has not to be on the main page and could be outsourced to other pages... --Falk 14:30, 2 November 2008 (CET)

Toolbar

I miss the Mediawiki toolbar, so editing articles is difficult for some users and impossibe for me from my portable device. Regards. Nopetro.

What toolbar do you mean? Which tools are missing? (maybe a link to another page with such a tool bar would help to understand) --Falk 21:32, 17 February 2010 (CET)
