The Journey to the Safest Place On Earth

Film and debates about the geological disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in the Highlands

Calla in cooperation with local associations and some local municipalities organizes a screening tour of the Swiss film "Journey to the Safest Place on Earth" for communities in the Highlands under which a high-risk spent nuclear fuel could end up according to the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority (RAWRA).

The tour will take place at:

  • the Restaurant "U kostela" in Rudíkov on Thursday, February 4 at 6PM,
  • the Cinema in Dolní Cerekev on Friday, February 19 at 6PM,
  • the House of Culture in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem on Wednesday, February 24 at 6PM,
  • the Fire Brigade House in Hojkov on Thursday, February 25 at 5:30PM.

The film will always be followed by a discussion with an expert on nuclear energy Dalibor Stráský (the Government of Upper Austria) and energy consultant Edvard Sequens (Calla - Association for Preservation of the Environment). They will be joined by Oldřich Svoboda (NGO Zdravý domov Vysočina) in Rudíkov, Petra Nováčková (NGO 2. Alternativa) in Dolní Cerekev, City Councillor Vít Novotný in Bystřice nad Penštejnem and the Mayor Milada Duchanová in Hojkov.

The film "Journey to the Safest Place on Earth" which was also shown at 2015 EKOFILM Festival in Brno, depicts the problems of long-term fruitless search for a safe place for spent nuclear fuel worldwide. Together with the Swiss-British nuclear physicist Charles McCombie, who has dedicated thirty-five years of his life to this issue, the director Edgar Hagen examines limitations and contradictions related to the project of geological disposal. Thanks to him the audience will visit a number of locations in Europe, USA, Australia and Asia where projects on the ultimate solution for nuclear waste had been or have been taking place.

Edvard Sequens of Calla said: "According to RAWRA, this "Safest Place on Earth" might also be in the Highlands where thousands of tons of high-level waste (HLW) have been produced in the nuclear power plant (NPP) Dukovany. For many years we have been watching the work of the responsible authorities and we are increasingly concerned about how uncertain the criteria for selection of disposal sites are and how the interests of people, whose future will be changed by the HLW management, are overlooked."

The aim of the project "Stronger Voice of Residents of the Highlands in Search of a Deep Geological Disposal" supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA funds via Civil Society Development Foundation (NROS) is to strengthen the role of citizens of municipalities in the process of site selection. The possibilities of mayors and the public to defend their interests are actually highly limited and inadequate for effective participation as it is understood by modern European approaches.
