PR:Talvivaara and Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) do not wish the public to participate in the inspection at the mine
Press Release 21-Nov-2012 / Stop Talvivaara
Environmental disaster in Finland:
Talvivaara and Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) do not wish the public to participate in the inspection at the mine
A delegation of three personnel hoping to participate in Monday morning's inspection at the Talvivaara mine were stopped by the outer gate by Talvivaara security.
Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) replied on the phone that the public and non-governmental organisations will not be allowed to participate in the inspection visit. Apparently there's no conversation between the public and Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). According to Tukes inquiries may be delivered only in written form. Therefore, the public's right to participate in decisions regarding the use of their environment seems to be prevented by Talvivaara and Tukes.
The public's delegation would have been satisfied if two people without cameras would be allowed to participate in the inspection, but that was not accepted either. This makes the inspection and the following consideration if there are qualifications for restarting the operations to appear as a mere formality.
