For the third time IBB Dortmund organizes the European action weeks "For a future after Chernobyl and Fukushima". From March 7th to April 28th 2014 partner in nine countries participate with talks with wittnesses and candle actions. A number of events will discuss alternatives to nuclear power and concepts of energy efficiency as well as sustainable lifestyle. The 2014 European Action Weeks will be opened in the city hall of Dortmund.

What are action weeks?

Action weeks are arranged Europe-wide by committees in collaboration with national partner organisations and the IBB Dortmund (International Education Centre in Dortmund). The core element of action weeks is discussions with contemporary witnesses from Ukraine and Belarus and pupils and young people. Witnesses ("Liquidators" or ressetlers) talk about their duty in Chernobyl or about their resettlement, so that people can comprehend the horror of the catastrophe. The action weeks shall also show future perspectives, and inform the public about the alternatives to nuclear power. To do this the committees conduct events (lectures and presentations) about renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable lifestyle. Action weeks inspire learning past mistakes from our history, and promote cooperation in Europe to create a shared future. In 2012 the action week took place in 112 cities in Poland, Great Britain, Spain, Ukraine and Germany. In 2013 action weeks took place in over 150 cities in Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Spain, Ukraine, Belarus, Austria, Turkey and Germany. In 2014 action weeks are also planned in those 9 countries and 150 cities.

Committees and national partner organisations

Local committees with representatives from different institutions arrange action weeks locally. Members are, for example, volunteers and full-time employees from local associations; churches, city councils, schools, environmental organisations, a.s.o. The committees have a very established local network and use their contacts to reach their target group, which are pupils and young people as well as the public. The work of committees in each country is coordinated by their national partner organisation which makes all arrangements in agreement with IBB.
