Atomic Threats In The Baltic Sea Region/Call out

From Nuclear Heritage

Call out for a network strengthening anti-nuclear activities in the
Baltic Sea region

In the Baltic Sea region the atomic lobby is pushing for a number of
nuclear projects increasing the threats facing people and environment
in the area. New reactors, upgrading of nuclear power plants,
repositories for hazardous atomic waste, new uranium mines... As if
the existing legacy of atomic stations facilities and mines wouldn't
be enough! Groups and citizens are struggling against these projects
in many places, often faced to a strong alliance of nuclear companies,
authorities and politicians benefiting from these developments. On the
other hand the networks and cooperations of anti-nuclear groups and
NGOs in the region mostly appear isolated and on low level.

We see much potential to strengthen the anti-nuclear struggles of the
groups, NGOs and individuals opposing the atomic technology, lobby and
ideology. Making an effort we can learn about each other's topics and
struggles, connect with each other, and support in campaigning,
spreading the word, organizing information events or actions... All it
needs is awareness of the interrelations and some time to be provided
for this supraregional and international networking.

With the "Atomic Threats In The Baltic Sea Region" project we are
attempting to establish a framework and network to strengthen anti-
nuclear struggles around the Baltic Sea. We want to connect activists
with each other, help to spread the word on atomic threats and to
increase the impact of anti-nuclear campaigns.

A very first meeting to discuss and form this network/project will
take place on September 20-23 in Döbeln/Germany. You are cordially
invited to join us in this event. If you need support for your travel
expenses, please contact us! We will try to make it possible for
everyone to participate in this planning meeting.
Please write to atomicbaltic AT nuclear-heritage.net[1] to announce your
participation in the meeting, to get more information or to ask for
travel costs support!

With the "Atomic Threats In The Baltic Sea Region" project we want to
organize information events, campaign against nuclear power,
investigate on atomic facilities and produce flyers and other
materials to spread the word. Some first thoughts and information on
this network/project is provided on our webpage:

So far, activists and groups from Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania
and Poland are already active in this project. Two NGOs in Austria and
the Netherlands are supporting us with their experiences and
knowledge. We want to involve groups and individuals also from all
other countries in the watershed of the Baltic Sea: Belarus, Denmark,
Estonia, Russia, Sweden and Norway. And of course, we also aim on
reaching more people and groups also in the countries involved to the
project already.

We are looking forward to your response!
Talk soon!
